A Sagamore Hill Family Photo Session with Grandparents

My client recently moved to Long Island from California. Her family, including her parents, still live on the West Coast. She decided that for her first Thanksgiving here in Jericho, New York, she would book a family photo session with her two little boys to commemorate this next chapter in their life. She also wanted to include her parents, who would be in town visiting for the holiday. I just love the idea of incorporating grandparents into photo sessions. After all, they are such an important part of your life.

It was yet another gorgeous and warm November night on the afternoon of this session. My client chose the beautiful Sagamore Hill for the location for her photos. Although this location is often crowded with many photographers, it is a beautiful spot for photos, especially at sunset.

I always start extended family sessions with the large group portrait. I find children tend to be most focused at the start of a session and although I don’t like rigid poses, the large extended family portrait typically requires posing. We were able to do this posed image at the start, which gave us plenty of time to capture some interactive images of the family together. These boys are toddler aged, so there was a lot of running and game playing involved. I also tried to sneak in some traditional posed images.

This family is so sweet. It is so evident how much the grandparents love each other and their family. I just love the images in which I was able to capture my client with her parents. Many times we focus on the grandchildren and grandparent relationship, but your relationship with your parents is just as worthy of being documented.

There was such a spectacular sunset on the evening of this session and my favorite images captured from the day are of the boys running in the large grass field bathed in sunlight and mom and dad running with the kids in the sunset. I am a sucker for action shots, especially when there is an epic sunset involved. Those are the type of images I would want to hang on my own walls in my home.

Here are a few of my favorites from the day.
