Family Sessions with Toddlers are Fun…Yes, They Are!

I first photographed this family when my client’s oldest daughter was around two years old. Since then I had the pleasure of photographing her second daughter and now third girl. Although we have done a few sessions in the past, this was the first full family session my client booked.

With three children under four, it can seem like a challenge to have those family photos taken, but it doesn’t have to be difficult and can be quite fun. I try my best to follow the lead of the children so that I can capture those images you are hoping for. If you are looking for a gallery filled with children sitting sweetly in each and every image, I am not the photographer for you. However, if you connect to images that show your unique dynamic, we are a perfect fit.

This does not mean that I do not capture traditional posed images during a session. In fact, I always manage to capture those, even with the most energetic of toddlers. My goal is never about those perfect images…I actually think there is beauty in imperfection and I love the whirlwind that is parenthood. That imperfection is what I strive to capture. You only have your children for a short period of time. There will come a time when you long for the days of hurried chaos. Photos are what will bring you right back to that time.

This session took place on a night during which time the weather was not aligning with my goals. The skies looked quite ominous and there even was a bit of drizzle that occurred shortly before the session time. Although I follow the radar and weather report, sometimes Mother Nature has her own mind and can be unpredictable. I moved the start time of this cloudy evening session slightly earlier. The start of this session took place under cloudy skies, but as we moved through the session, the sun made a grand appearance and even gave way to a sunset.

The girls were a blast to work with. Big sisters were so sweet and loving to one another and clearly love their baby sister so much. Baby L, was hesitant at the start of this session, but as we moved through the hour, she warmed up and I just love her big smile. The benefit of a full session to a mini session is that it provides amble time for children who are camera shy to warm up and is great for those kids who need some extra coaxing for images.

I just love this family’s collection of images. here are a few of my favorites.
