Surprise, It's a Girl Studio Newborn Session | Classic Family Newborn Photography
When I was pregnant with both of my girls, I had to find out the gender before they arrived. I am a planner by nature and the thought of waiting nine months to discover the gender of my baby always seemed daunting to me. In retrospect, I wish I had the patience to wait it out. Although I will not be having any more babies, I am able to share in the excitement of my clients, most of whom are patient and discover the sex of their baby at birth.
This recent session was a family that I photographed in the past for their second son's first birthday session. When they messaged me to tell me that their baby arrived, I was ecstatic to hear they had delivered a beautiful and healthy girl. I couldn't wait to photograph them as a family during their studio lifestyle newborn session.
My approach to sibling and family newborn photos is a bit different than other photographers. I prefer more natural and relaxed images that simulate photos I would capture in a client's home. So, I don't use backdrops for this portion of the session and, instead, photograph families cuddled up together on a bed, which gives the images a warm and classic look.
Because this family is from Breezy Point, I knew I had to somehow incorporate my Little Unicorn mermaid swaddle that I have been dying to use. If you haven't checked out this company's swaddling blankets and you have a newborn or are expecting one, please do so; the muslin blankets are the best and truly make swaddling a breeze. (By the way, I am not affiliated with the company, nor am I compensated for this. I just love to help out new moms and sing the praises of products that actually work.) I also had a few new outfits that I recently added to my newborn wardrobe, one of which was a vintage style lace romper in coral and I was elated to use it during this session.
The big brothers were truly rock stars during this session. I know it isn't always easy for toddlers to cooperate during these types of sessions, but these two were absolute angels. I always try to get all of the photographs with the siblings done first and as quickly as possible before we lose their focus. I also am always flexible and if the siblings need time to warm up, I start with the newborn portraits first.
It is important to capture classic portraits of the baby during this type of session. I do so with either the use of my handmade wood pallet backdrop or the natural white backdrops. My style for newborn photography is very clean and uncluttered. I don't typically use props, but I recently came across an adorable distressed bed that I felt would be a good option to use for some of my clients. I like my portraits of baby to be simple and natural, so I am still not sure if I am in love with this bed. What do you think?
These are a few of my favorites from this beautiful baby girl's session.
